Good Psychology and Self-Help Writing Embraces the “Self”

Imagine that your favorite psychology professor from grad school, or maybe the therapist who made you want to become a therapist, has written a book. Someone you’ve been in a room with, listening eagerly to their pearls of psychological wisdom. You’ve known this person to speak with spot-on gusto about everything from the mind’s operational quirks to principles of mental health. You can’t wait for their passionate expertise to reach the bookshelves of those they would otherwise never have the opportunity to instruct, guide, help to heal.

Now imagine finally opening their book and finding prose no less sterile than a troubleshooting guide for lab equipment. The disconnect would be jarring. No matter how intellectually sound, painstakingly structured, to-the-hilt researched, and well intentioned, this book—you realize—has no chance of reaching people the way its author has reached you in person.

Writing, especially about complex subjects like psychology, lacks the immediacy and connection of an in-person conversation. A book can’t clarify a point on the fly, pivot to address a confused expression, or throw in a spontaneous anecdote to drive home a concept. Whether he’s discussing entrenched tax breaks for California golf courses or the moral obligation to protect football players from football, Podcaster Gladwell—like Author Gladwell—shifts between passion, fascination, and frustration in a way that encourages listeners not only to comprehend the issue at hand but to grasp its emotional weight.

As a psychology writer, you can (figuratively please) take a page from Gladwell's book. By allowing your voice, values, and emotional investment to come through, you can reflect some of the real human effects of the subject you're writing about. This stands to create trust when the reader already feels strongly about the same issue and, when they don't have a ready emotional response, to encourage their thoughtful consideration.

The Bridge from Analytical to Accessible

Psychology often demands a shift in how readers think. It challenges assumptions about human behavior and asks readers to adopt a more analytical lens. For a nonprofessional audience, this can be as comfortable as jumping, fully clothed, into the deep end of a pool in early March: at once overwhelming, restrictive, and honestly a bit too cold.

When authors write conversationally—incorporating familiar examples from culture alongside personal insights—they help build a bridge between their professional understanding and the reader’s everyday experiences. Instead of feeling talked at, the reader feels guided. Instead of struggling to connect abstract principles to lived experience, they’re offered relatable scenarios that bring theory down to earth.

Your Voice Is Your Model

Your narrative voice doesn’t only convey information—it can actually model a healthy relationship to the psychology fundamentals that underpin whatever specific findings, suggestions, and arguments form the heart of your work.

Readers don’t have the benefit of seeing you embody psychological insights in real time. But they can observe how you think through problems, build arguments, confront uncertainty, address conflicting perspectives and emotions, balance confidence and openness, etc. Your writing can serve as a context in which your mastery of key principles plays out, offering readers a sort of in vivo demonstration.

This allows readers to see that your understanding of human behavior isn’t just academic; it’s actionable. It’s something they can take off the page and into the complexities of real life.
